What is International Macaque Week?
International Macaque Week is an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness about macaques, their conservation, their welfare, and the many challenges they face in the wild and in human environments. The week brings together organizations, researchers, rescue centres, and supporters around the world to share knowledge, promote respect for macaques, and support efforts to protect them.

How did International Macaque Week Start?
International Macaque Week was founded by Barbary Macaque Awareness and Conservation.
Initially it was a single-day event to be held annually in March, but there was so much enthusiasm that it was quickly extended to a whole week. Since 2024, International Macaque Week has been coordinated by the AfA Macaque Coalition (MACC).

Challenges Facing Macaques
A Crisis Behind Familiar Faces
We see macaques almost everywhere, in temples, on our streets, and even online, yet we rarely see their true nature or the threats they face
Despite these challenges, everyone can play a role in protecting macaques. International Macaque Week is an opportunity to get involved, raise awareness, and support macaque conservation and welfare.

Theme: Respect Their Nature
Each year, International Macaque Week highlights a theme to help focus awareness and action. This year’s theme, #RespectTheirNature, encourages people to better understand macaques, respect their natural behaviour, and support peaceful coexistence between humans and macaques.
The campaign promotes empathy, responsible behaviour around wildlife, and protection of macaques in their natural environments.
