International Macaque Week
International Macaque Week (IMW) is observed annually and dedicated to raising awareness of and empathy for one of the world's most persecuted groups of primates.
IMW was founded by Barbary Macaque Awareness and Conservation (BMAC) and is coordinated in 2024 by the AfA Macaque Coalition (MACC). We invite NGOs, sanctuaries, zoos, educational institutions and others to join forces in celebrating these magnificent creatures.
Each year, during the first week of May, IMW is an opportunity for macaque enthusiasts worldwide to showcase their combined commitment through a variety of activities. Whether it's a heartfelt social media post or an elaborate fundraising event, every action contributes to the cause.

Respect Their Nature
This year's theme - "Respect Their Nature" aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for macaques' intelligence and social complexity. Allowing them to be perceived in ways most natural to them in their respective shared environment.
Macaques, particularly a handful of the approximately 24 species spread across Asia (and in the case of the Barbary macaque, North Africa), are among the most heavily exploited wild mammals on earth. Often put in situations that go against their natural needs, like in a household, at wildlife markets, or in a lab.
Through this campaign, "Respect Their Nature" becomes a call to action, inspiring individuals, communities, and organizations to embrace a mindset of empathy, stewardship, and advocacy for macaques. It’s a reminder that respecting their nature ensures a future where humans and macaques thrive together in harmony.
