JAAN's Macaque Rehab Center
Ever wondered how macaques from the wild end up in a rehab center?
Come follow Femke den Haas, founder of JAAN Indonesia and co-founder of Jakarta Animal Aid Network, on a tour around the macaque rehabilitation center in West Java! A campaign started in 2010 to advocate for the ban of dancing monkeys in Indonesia is now working with the government to rescue and release hundreds of macaques - from being traded and now back to the wild!🐵
The representative of West Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency will also join us in sharing the challenges they faced in dealing with issues related to macaques in West Java, and there will be a discussion about future plans for ensuring the protection of macaques in Indonesia.

Virtual Tour - From the Field
A collaboration between field researchers and a zoo to observe free-ranging bonnet and lion-tailed macaques in their native habitats.
The Japan Monkey Centre will join us in hosting a second virtual tour event with primate researchers Praneetha Monipi (Adhvaya Foundation) and Santanu Mahato (SACON), in celebrating macaques and promoting #RespectTheirNature—no matter where they are found, whether in captivity or in the wild.
We will begin by following Santanu on a tour of the lion-tailed macaques' roaming area in Western Ghats, India. Then, Praneetha will share her fieldwork with bonnet macaques living alongside people in the urban environment of Mysore, India.
Afterwards, Misato Hayashi, Director of the Academic Division at the Japan Monkey Center, will give a short presentation and lead a discussion on successful partnerships between zoo-based and field-based conservation practitioners.
The objectives of this event are to:
-
Exchange perspectives between ex situ and in situ conservation efforts.
-
Explore ways in which captive facilities can collaborate with field researchers.
-
Demonstrate the different roles that zoos and field researchers can play in fostering respect for and promoting coexistence with macaques.

Join us!
We encourage everyone to help spread macaque positivity. If you are interested in collaborating or want to tell us about your plans for International Macaque Week, please reach out to us at macaques@asiaforanimals.com.
